The National Gallery of Art
Overview
The National Gallery of Art (NGA) houses one of the most important collections of Dutch art in the world. Many of these pieces were published in Dutch Paintings of the Seventeenth Century — but after the massive book went out of print, NGA looked for ways to reimagine the volume as a media-rich and searchable website.
REINVENTING THE PRINT EDITION
Rather than simply replicating the print volume online, the database introduces multimedia resources, from online tours and lectures to classroom materials and additional information from peer institutions. The resource is built to serve the entire art community, including art historians, graduate-level students, and general audiences interested in art.
DISCOVERING DUTCH ART
Visitors can explore the Dutch collection through the site’s search function, or by browsing according to time span, medium, or works currently on view at the NGA.
RESEARCH-FRIENDLY
On artwork detail pages, visitors can toggle between reader mode and normal display, or download all available information on that work as a single PDF — a useful function for students and researchers alike.
