Forest Park Forever

mobile Forest Park interactive map design

Overview

With 13 million annual visitors, Forest Park is the sixth most-visited urban park in the United States. Forest Park Forever, the organization that works to maintain the landmark, asked TOKY to create an interactive map to help visitors explore the park’s grounds, collection, and 140-year history.

MOBILE-FRIENDLY MAPPING

Forest Park’s existing map, which lived on the main park website, was formatted for print and proved hard to read or navigate on a small screen. The new map microsite loads quickly, can be viewed on any device, and uses GPS to show visitors exactly where they are as they wander the grounds.

ADDING CONTEXT

To tell a richer story about the park, the map includes individual location descriptions with history, hours, and admission info. This data lives in popups that open on click or tap, so as not to sacrifice the overall readability of the map.

NAVIGATE BY INTEREST

Park visitors can easily find areas of the park that suit their interests by selecting specific location categories. Tapping the “Natural Highlights” category, for example, presents the user with pinpoints for the park’s forests, islands, and savannas.

Feedback

“We view this online map as a way of making [visitor] experiences even better. We also hope that it will encourage people to discover new areas of the park and learn a bit more about this St. Louis treasure.”
